So here at “That’s All I Have to Say About That” I try and get you, the reader, thinking about different topics, I share some of my own insights, and then we delve deeper into it in the comments section. What all of this boils down to is all of us being able to learn more about marketing through this blog. Well, since I have limited knowledge and time, I’ve decided to pull in the thoughts of others and start giving you a weekly list of some of the better reads I’ve come across during the week that was. Some are from blogs (which you may have even written!), some are from traditional media, all are freakin awesome.
Here’s this week’s LoL:
Marketing
- “Marketing is Like Sex: Everybody Thinks They’re Good at It” by Steve Tobak (The Corner Office)- Admit it, you saw the word “sex” and immediately got more interested in the LoL
- “5 Myths That Can Kill Your Marketing Copy” by Susan Gunelius (Entrepreneur.com) – Some very valuable insights in this bit, especially #1. I think more companies should understand this is the case. (h/t Stuart Foster)
- “Are You Holding Back Your Creativity?” by Danny Brown and “The Key to Jump Starting Your Creativity” by David Mullen (Communications Catalyst) – A couple great reads that go very well together. The first will inspire you to be creative, and the second will help give ideas of how to jump start your creativity.
- “Marketing Definitions from the Top Marketers on Twitter” (Systemic Marketing) – I’ll admit, some of these are pretty weak, but some of my favorites are Jennifer Aaker, Kent Huffman, and Steve Miller (h/t @kenthuffman)
Social Media
- [Video] “The Rise of Social Video Marketing” (AdAge) – A look at Samsung’s recent social video marketing tactics and the possibilities for companies to create consumer interaction through social videos.
Inspiration
- “Why You Need to Fail” by Peter Bregman (Harvard Business) – If you read anything on this list, this is a very good choice. Failing isn’t bad. It’s crucial to fail in order to grow.
- “Ask the Tough Questions” by Ryan Stephens (Ryan Stephens Marketing) – Ryan’s my buddy, but this one isn’t a biased choice. Learning to ask the tough questions is crucial to improving and building a stronger company.

Thanks for the mention! The article isn’t intended to be a pitch for my book. Entpreneur Press published it and I write about copywriting for Entrepreneur.com. I’m happy they let featured columnists include links to their related books or work with our articles because we don’t get paid to write those articles!
Hey Jackie, many thanks for mentioning my marketing definition as one of your favorites. I appreciate it!
Steve Miller
Hi Susan, thanks for taking the time to stop by! Nothing was meant by the comment, and I’ve removed it. I really enjoyed the article though and love Entrepreneur.com, so keep it coming!
Jackie,
Thank you for your response. I’m really happy you enjoyed my article. I write one for Entrepreneur each month. I particularly enjoyed writing this one, so it’s great to hear when other people enjoy it.
