For those of you who are new around here, Analogous Friday is a little diddy I do every week (on a Friday, duh) where I share with you a super awesome video that I’ve come across for your entertainment. Then, after said entertainment, I’ll make some asinine analogy for how it relates to marketing and business. Then, in the comments, you continue the analogousness and come up with your own. So, those are the rules, kiddos, now let’s get started.
If you’ve watched SportsCenter at all this week, you probably saw these guys make a shot off of Texas A&M’s football stadium. Well, they have a website chock full of shots like these. So WTF does this have to do with marketing and business? So glad you asked…
ALL ABOUT PERCEPTION
There’s been some heated debate on whether or not these videos are legit. Well I’m here to tell you it doesn’t really matter because it looks pretty dang real, enough so to get the attention of people all across the nation. It’s the same with marketing any sort of product. It doesn’t matter if your product actually is the “best” product on the market, it only matters if it’s perceived as the top product out there. Wanna know more? Check out how you can use “the force.”
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR FREE TIME?
These guys look like they’re a bunch of engineering students who were really really bored. So, did they decide to do waste their time playing Halo 3? No! They decided to do something way more productive. Which brings up my next point, how are you using your free time lately? At work when you have down time, are you wasting time playing poker on Yahoo? Or are you using it to learn new skills that will make you a more valuable employee? Why not learn how to use Photoshop? Spare time can be wasted, or it could be turned into valuable learning experiences. How are you using it?
Are you dying for more Analogous Friday? Check out some from previous weeks:

A&M doesn't play around. Gig'em.
Yeah, I could do all that, I just CHOOSE not to make people feel bad by filming it and uploading it to youtube. Whatever…
I think it is important to not spend all your spare time lounged out on a couch staring at the moving picture box with drool coming out of the corner of your mouth. However I wouldn't say that EVERY MOMENT of your spare time should be spent as learning/advancement opportunities. Sometimes you need to just read an amazing work of literature (whether fiction or non-fiction,) spend a day hiking and reflecting on a mountaintop somewhere or just grabbing a beer (or root beer) with your friends at the local pub.
If you don't allocate some of your time to this PERSONAL development and brain decompression otherwise you'll become highly imbalanced and a little (lot) crazy!
You could argue that they play around quite a bit from this video. They just play around really, really well
First of all thank you being so considerate and not putting us all to shame. That's very noble of you
I'm definitely with you, Elisa. I guess I was thinking more about working efficiently (when you're supposed to be working) with that point. Trust me, I'm the king of chillaxin to the max away from work, whether it's playing my xbox, golfing, watching a movie, you name it. That type stuff is important to get you rested and recharged. Speaking of which, I could use some of all of that right about now!
Interesting point: It doesn’t matter if your product actually is the “best” product on the market, it only matters if it’s perceived as the top product out there.
I think we see this a lot in branding – if you build a strong enough brand, people will assume all of your products represent that brand and are of the highest caliber. That being said, if you suddenly begin to produce one product that isn't “the best” or even “your best” then you run the risk of tarnishing your brand.
On an unrelated note…dude, those shots are ridiculous. I'm a bit skeptical but I would probably never want to play those guys in a game of HORSE
Good point Katie, you can definitely use this perception to your advantage, but you have to be careful not to push your luck and tarnish your brand because people can jump ship pretty quickly on you.
I'm pretty sure the beard somehow helps him make those ridiculous shots. I just don't know how…yet…
I've found there is a fine line between not wasting your time, and needing to spend some time doing something else to rewind.
My thoughts recently are spending quality time. Not wasting it. If I'm going to watch a movie, I'm going to watch it, or play soccer, or do anything. Then I can come back and be refreshed.
But there's time when you don't have to sit there and watch the 45th episode of CSI. (Much like Elisa said already!)
Some of the most successful viral campaigns have a central theme and underlying question: “Is this real?” This is what makes everyone take a look.
When marketing a product, especially a product that has little brand awareness, you want people to be asking the same question: “Are the claims made in the advertising real?”
Getting people to question a product or advertisement's reality is an amazing way to build up hype, and these guys have done it extremely well.
In reference to your beard point– I have been fairly beard-y at times and it did not impact my HORSE game.
I'm not a CSI person, but what about watching entire seasons of The Office?
I agree with you, though. Use that time to recharge.
Hmm…maybe it's just Texans then
